Knife valves
Solutions for abrasive and contaminated fluids
Gate valves were designed for applications involving mud and abrasives. They are frequently used in fluids containing abrasive particles. These valves are called gate valves because they intercept the fluid flow with a blade (or spool) perpendicular to it.
Performance: Designed for abrasive and heavily loaded fluids
Materials: Ductile iron, AISI 304/316 stainless steel
Controls: Manual, electric, pneumatic
Main characteristics of knife valves
- Designed for fluids containing abrasive particles and solids
- Blade perpendicular to the flow for effective interception
- Perfect seal with elastomer or metallic seat
- One-piece body for greater robustness
- Ideal for on/off applications
- Suitable for highly fibrous fluids and sludges
- Reduced maintenance and reliable operation
Operating principle
Gate valves get their name from their operating mechanism, which functions like a guillotine. They intercept the fluid flow using a blade (or spool) that moves perpendicular to the flow direction. This blade opens and closes vertically between two O-rings, creating an effective barrier against fluids containing solids.
Unlike butterfly valves, the blade movement is unaffected by solids in the fluid, making them particularly suitable for applications involving mud, sediment, and fibers. Operation in either the fully open or fully closed position is preferred. They are not suitable for precise flow control but excel in on/off applications with impure fluids.
